Codenames is a competitive party board game designed for four or more players divided into two teams. The gameplay centers on a grid of twenty-five cards, each displaying a unique word that represents hidden identities known only to each team's designated spymaster.

Spymasters provide one-word clues to guide their field operatives in identifying specific cards belonging to their color. Operatives must interpret these clues to select the correct words while avoiding those belonging to the opposing team or neutral bystanders.

The game board includes a single assassin square that results in an immediate loss for any team that selects it. Victory is achieved by the first team to successfully identify all of their assigned agent cards based on the secret key provided to the spymasters.

The set includes a variety of word cards and a randomized key card system to ensure a different configuration for every session. This structure emphasizes deductive reasoning and communication, earning the title recognition as a Spiel des Jahres award winner.
